FAIZABAD, Afghanistan, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Afghan fighting aircrafts targeted Taliban positions in Kuran-wa-Munjan district of the northern Badakhshan province, killing 10 armed insurgents on Wednesday, a pro-government militia commander Mohammad Sharif said.
The fighting aircrafts targeted a Taliban gathering in the district, which was recently captured by the miliaant group, early Wednesday morning killing 10 fighters on the spot and injuring around a dozen others, according to the commander.
Taliban militants captured the strategically important district over the weekend.
Kuran-wa-Munjan district borders Panjshir and Nuristan provinces. If Taliban militants were able to control the beleaguered district, the armed outfit could influence Panjshir, Nuristan, the neighboring Laghman in the east and Takhar province in the north, according to locals.
Afghan forces have been striving hard to recapture Kuran-wa-Munjan district.
Taliban militants, who are already in control of Wardoj and Yamgan districts in Badakhshan, have not commented on the situation in Kuran-wa-Munjan district.
