QALA-E-NAW, Afghanistan, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Up to 50 militants including a key commander were killed as military aircraft targeted a Taliban militants' gathering in besieged Ab Kamari district of Afghanistan's western Badghis province on Thursday, provincial governor Abdul Ghafoor Malikzai said.
"Acting upon intelligence report, the security forces' fighting aircraft struck Taliban's assembly point in Ab Kamari district before noon today, killing 50 rebels including the group's notorious commander Sayed Shah on the spot," Malikzai told Xinhua.
The airstrikes against militants in the area would continue, the official said.
According to the locals, Taliban militants have besieged Ab Kamari district over the past 10 days and government forces have been fighting back to expel the insurgents from the area.
Taliban militants who have intensified activities, are yet to make comment on the situation in the troubled district.
