MUMBAI, July 27 (Xinhua) -- All passengers have been rescued and evacuated safely from a stranded train due to incessant rain at Badlapur, 53 km from Mumbai, an Indian railway official said Saturday.
"All 700 passengers have been evacuated safely," the official said, although initial updates estimated that over 1,000 passengers had been stranded.
The rescued passengers on the Kolhapur-bound train included nine pregnant women, the official said.
Food and water arrangements were made by the authorities along with necessary travel arrangements for the passengers to continue their travel further.
The train was stranded due to water logging on railway tracks following heavy rain that has been lashing Mumbai city and adjacent districts for the past two days.
