TRIPOLI, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Libya's east-based rebel army on Thursday said they killed more than 25 soldiers of the rival UN-backed government in battles in the capital Tripoli.

The government forces did not confirm the casualties, but later in the day said they destroyed a military vehicle and captured six soldiers of the rebel enemy in southern Tripoli. The rebel army accused the government forces of bombing civilian areas there.

The rebel army has been leading a military campaign since early April to take over Tripoli from the UN-backed government.

The conflict has so far killed more than 1,000 people, injured more than 5,700 others, and forced more than 120,000 people to flee their homes, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Libya has been mired in conflicts and chaos ever since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
