ABUJA, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Nine Boko Haram militants were killed when Nigerian troops repelled three coordinated attacks launched in the country's northeastern state of Borno, military sources said on Friday.
Various weapons used by the terror group were also recovered during the midweek attacks thwarted by the troops in three locations of Borno, said a senior army officer who didn't want his name mentioned.
One of the thwarted attacks was targeted at a military location in Benisheikh, said the army officer. Three of the Boko Haram militants were killed in a gunfight which followed the attack.
In the other encounters in Mainok and Jakana of the northern state on Tuesday and Wednesday, troops dealt a heavy blow on the terrorists, another military official said.
"Six terrorists were killed as troops ambushed them and then followed a gunfight which lasted for about an hour," said the source.
In one of the gunfights, the Boko Haram militants were trying to transport foodstuffs to their camps when the troops swooped them, the sources said.
The Boko Haram is known for its agenda to maintain a virtual caliphate in the most populous African country.
