BANGKOK, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Thai Meteorological Department on Friday warned residents in north and northeastern Thailand of possible heavy rains from tropical storm Wipha, which is expected to make landfall in Vietnam.

Although the storm will not hit the heart of Thailand, it will bring heavy rains to north and northeastern Thailand.

Nan City Municipality has installed more water pumps at Satri Si Nan School to cope with rain which will continue over the next two days.

Authorities of Nan City Municipality have dredged canals to ensure drainage capacity.

Water allocation officials for hydroelectric dams in the upper basin area of Nan River have raised five water gates at Thong Noi dam, maximizing drainage capacity in Sirikit dam and preventing the overflow of rivers into surrounding communities.

The rain continued to fall in Thailand's northeastern province of Bueng Kan, raising water levels to 3.5 meters in the Mekong river.

Strong winds have brought down trees and billboards, damaged houses, blocked roads, and caused power outages in the country's eastern province of Chanthaburi.
