RABAT, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Moroccan police in the northern city of Nador have arrested a 49-year-old Spanish driver for helping smuggle migrants to Europe, Moroccan news agency MAP reported Friday.
The suspect was driving an international truck registered in Spain transporting a migrant hidden inside the vehicle, according to the report.
Investigation revealed that the suspect had carried out two similar operations in return for a sum of 1,200 U.S. dollars per person, via an individual who received money amounting to 7,000 dollars per person, it added.
The operation was uncovered after the migrant, who was suffocating, was forced to call a family member for help using his cell phone, after which his family member notified the police.
According to the Moroccan authorities, over 40,300 illegal immigration attempts were foiled in the first six months of 2019.
