LAGOS, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Five pastors working with one of Nigeria's largest churches, the Redeemed Christian Church of God, have been abducted by unknown gunmen in the country's southwest region, the church said on Friday.
Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the general overseer of the church, disclosed that the victims were on their way to attend the church's monthly conference in the commercial hub, Lagos.
Adeboye said the abduction took place on Thursday in the southwestern state of Ogun. He said this was the first time such an incident of that magnitude had happened, involving the church.
Local police have commenced an investigation into the incident.
Abduction is common in Nigeria. The abduction of foreigners and high profile individuals in the country has been on the increase recently.
