KHARTOUM, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Sudan's General Intelligence Service (GIS) on Saturday announced seizure of large amounts of weapons and ammunition, besides different types of drugs.
GIS's chief Abu-Bakr Dambalab said at a press conference in Khartoum that the GIS is a national body performing its duty with high professionalism, noting the GIS works in coordination with all other security systems including the armed forces, the rapid support forces and the military intelligence.
On July 29, the TMC's chairman Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan issued a constitutional decree to restructure the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) and change its name to GIS.
After the ouster of former President Omar al-Bashir by the Sudanese army in April, the opposition forces demanded the NISS be dissolved.
However, the TMC, which is running the country's affairs, insists on the existence of the NISS but agrees to restructure it into a body that focuses on combating terrorism and espionage, preventing human trafficking and fighting corruption and money laundering.
According to a constitutional declaration agreed on by the TMC and the Freedom and Change Alliance on Saturday, the GIS would be under the supervision of the sovereignty council and the council of ministers during the transitional period.
