KUNMING, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Wild Asian elephants were suspected of having killed a villager in southwest China's Yunnan Province, police said.
The victim was found dead on Saturday morning in a sugarcane field in Meng'a Township of Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture. Police found footprints and droppings of wild elephants in the vicinity. Sugarcanes were also battered down.
The identity of the victim is yet to be verified.
Wild Asian elephants have been roaming the area for more than a month, authorities said.
Wild Asian elephants, with a population of about 300 in China, are under Class A protection. In China, they are mainly found in Yunnan.
With stronger environmental and wildlife protection efforts, the number of wild Asian elephants in China has grown in recent years.
