SEOUL, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Japanese car sale in South Korea posted a double-digit fall last month amid the spreading boycott campaign against Japanese products, industry data showed Monday.
The number of newly registered Japanese vehicles was 2,674 in July, down 32.2 percent from the previous month, according to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA). From a year earlier, it was down 17.2 percent.
The sharp decline came amid the rising "Boycott Japan" campaign, caused by Japan's tighter control on its export to South Korea in early July of three materials vital to produce memory chips and display panels, which are the mainstay of the South Korean export.
Japan removed South Korea on Friday from its whitelist of trusted trading partners that are given preferential procedure for export.
According to the Realmeter survey last week, nearly two-thirds of respondents said they joined the no-buy campaign to boycott Japanese products.
In July, the total number of newly registered foreign luxury vehicles here was 19,453, up 0.3 percent compared with the previous month.
During the January-June period, Japanese vehicle sale jumped 10.3 percent compared with the same period of last year.
