KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Seven Afghan police personnel have been killed after a comrade turned his weapon against them in Afghanistan's southern province of Kandahar, the provincial government said Monday.
The incident occurred at a security checkpoint in Tor Kotal locality of Shah Wali Kot district on Sunday, the government said in a statement.
The next of kin of the victims were notified earlier on Monday, and an investigation has been undertaken, according to the statement.
The Taliban insurgent group has claimed that the shooter was a Taliban sleeper cell and he had joined the insurgents after the shooting.
Some similar attacks had happened in the past. In late March, nine police officers were killed in an insider attack in neighboring Zabul province.
