SYDNEY, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Smart technology adapted for traffic control is set to be tested next week on Sydney's M4 Motorway, which connects much of the Harbour City's western suburbs.
The groundbreaking intelligent transport systems use traffic sensors that project electronic message signs for motorists and help avoid congested lanes.
"These new signals have been installed on a number of on-ramps," New South Wales (NSW) State Transport Minister Andrew Constance said on Wednesday.
"They will help to regulate traffic entering the motorway, as well as vehicles trying to merge at the same time," said Constance.
"This technology will ensure less stop-start traffic and sudden braking at some of the most congested points along the motorway."
With the entire project to be completed in 2020, Constance said the smart systems will talk to each other and automatically adjust to the incidents and congestion without manual operators.
They will test and measure driver behaviour and reaction to the technology next week, according to Constance.
If the trial is a success, the NSW Government said they will continue to look at technological upgrades for other major motorways, including the M1 Motorway between the city of Gosford and Sydney.
"By introducing these cutting-edge improvements we ensure drivers are spending less time in their vehicles and more time doing what they enjoy most," Constance added.
