KIGALI, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Rwandan President Paul Kagame inaugurated a newly-built indoor sports complex here on Friday, which is expected to enhance the country's capacity of hosting big internatioanl indoor games.
The central African country wants the new facility, named Kigali Arena, to help nurture champions and inspire young generations to grow, Kagame said when launching the facility.
The 10,000-seat complex completed in July is a multi-purpose building which can host indoor games, meetings, conferences, exhibitions and concerts. It boasts 13 cafeteria and restaurants, six changing rooms for teams, two rooms for coaching staff, a fitness center, a media hall, and a modern doping control room.
Kigali Arena is a great addition that puts Rwanda in a good position to host international games, Guy Rutayisire, director at the Rwandan ministry of sports, told reporters at the launching ceremony.
The arena will impact positively on the development of indoor games in Rwanda for instance basketball, volleyball and tennis, he said.
Kigali Arena will host the semifinals and the final of the inaugural Basketball Africa League next year in March and the 2021 FIBA Men's Africa Basketball Championship, according to Rwanda Basketball Federation.
