LUSAKA, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Zambia on Monday called on increased efforts from all stakeholders to curb elephant poaching in Zambia.
In its message to commemorate World Elephant Day which falls on August 12, the world's leading organization in wildlife conservation said in the statement posted on its website that it was working with partners to support the Department of National Parks and Wildlife's anti-poaching efforts in some of the ecosystems.
The WWF Zambia adds that its work with partners involves tackling the poaching threat through the installation of modern surveillance and communication technologies for improved security of elephants and their habitats.
According to figures, Zambia's elephant population declined from about 250,000 in the 1970s to about 21,000 in the early 2000, mainly due to poaching. The current population is estimated at 27,000.
