KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Five militants were killed and five others injured as security forces ambushed a group of Taliban fighters in the northern Kunduz province on Wednesday, said an army spokesman in the province, Abdul Khalil Khalili.

A group of Taliban militants were going to establish a checkpoint on a road leading to the border town of Shir Khan Port early morning. The security forces acting on tip-off launched a surprise attack and killed five armed militants on the spot.

Five more insurgents were injured, the official added.

No security personnel had been harmed in the firefight, Khalili asserted.

Taliban militants who are in control of parts of the relatively troubled Kunduz province haven't commented.
