LONDON, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- VAR again had a major say in the results in the second round of matches in the Premier League, after Manchester City had a late winning goal controversially ruled out against Tottenham Hotspur.

Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero twice put City ahead, but Spurs fought back both times through Eric Lamela and Lucas Moura, who had just come on as a substitute before scoring with his first touch in the 65th minute.

The home side thought Gabriel Jesus had secured all three points in the closing moments of the game, but the goal was controversially ruled out by VAR after an involuntary handball from Aymeric Laporte in the build-up.

The decision means City's winning run of 15 games comes to an end, and coach Pep Guardiola said after the match that VAR needed to be "fixed".

Liverpool made it two wins in two games with a 2-1 win over Southampton, just three days after they had beaten Chelsea in the European Super Cup.

Sadio Mane opened the scoring against his former club on the stroke of half-time, and Roberto Firmino added a second 20 minutes before the end. Former Liverpool striker Danny Ings pulled a goal back seven minutes from time after charging down a botched clearance by Reds keeper Adrian.

Dani Ceballos impressed as Arsenal beat a rugged Burnley 2-1 to maintain their 100 percent start to the season. The Spanish international dominated the midfield, laying on two assists for Alex Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Frank Lampard remains winless as Chelsea coach after his side were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City.

Mason Mount put Chelsea ahead early in the first half, but Wilfred Ndidi equalized midway through the second half to give Leicester a deserved point, and the visitors may feel they could have taken more from the game after a fine display from midfielder James Maddison.

Early goals from Josh King and Harry Wilson put Bournemouth on the way to a 2-1 win away to newly-promoted Aston Villa, who scored with 19 minutes left through Douglas Luiz, with the Brazilian partly atoning for conceding the penalty from which King opened the scoring.

It is shaping up to be a long season for Newcastle, who crashed to their second defeat in two games as they were well beaten 3-1 away to Premier League new boys Norwich City.

Teemu Pukki, who impressed in Norwich's opening day defeat to Liverpool, showed he can score the goals that may keep Norwich up by notching a superb hat-trick. Newcastle looked disjointed and lacking in ideas, which will do little to lift the hostility that many fans feel towards club owner Mike Ashley.

Javier Hernandez opened the scoring for West Ham away to Brighton, but the home side needed just four minutes to draw level thanks to Leandro Trossard, who had had an earlier goal chalked off by VAR for offside.

Everton got their first win of the season with a nervy 1-0 victory at home to Watford, with Bernard's deflected 10th minute strike separating the two sides and leaving Watford without a point so far this season.

Finally John Lundstram's 47th minute goal gave Sheffield United their first Premier League win as they beat Crystal Palace 1-0 to show after last weekend's draw away to Bournemouth that they are not in the top-flight just to make up the numbers.
