AU congratulates new PM of Sudanese transitional gov't

ADDIS ABABA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat on Monday hailed the appointment of Sudan's new prime minister.

Abdallah Hamdock was appointed as prime minister of the Transitional Government of Sudan following the formal signature of the power-sharing constitutional decree on Saturday.

"This historic achievement is the culmination of months of negotiations and the result of the steadfast and peaceful resolve of the Sudanese people, especially the women and Youth, for a democratic transition in Sudan," said Faki.

The chairperson commended all the political actors, civilian as well as military, for their commitment and spirit of compromise by placing the country's interests above all other considerations.

The chairperson emphasized on ensuring that the Sudanese authorities and all armed movements also reach an agreement within the first six months as per the decision taken during the peace process, to ensure that there is comprehensive peace and reconciliation which should pave the way to democratic transformation in Sudan.

The chairperson commended the international community for their support to a Sudanese-led process and the African mediation process that led to this positive outcome for the country, the region and the continent.

The chairperson reiterated AU's continued commitment to accompanying the Sudanese people in their pursuit towards a democratic Sudan.

Hamdok, who obtained a BSc degree from the University of Khartoum, MA and PhD degrees from the University of Manchester, was a senior official in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning during the 1980s.

In the 1990s, Hamdok held senior positions first at Deloitte & Touche, and then at the International Labour Organization in Zimbabwe, followed by several years at the African Development Bank in Cote d'Ivoire.

Hamdok was the regional director for Africa and the Middle East of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance from 2003 to 2008.

He worked as director of regional integration and trade for the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in 2001 and 2002, and UNECA deputy executive secretary from 2011 to October 2018.
