MEXICO CITY, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Latin American e-commerce giant Mercado Libre on Monday announced it has launched a category of "sustainable products" to address the concerns of young consumers throughout the region.

"Starting now, it is a permanent section that aims to not only meet demand, but also develop and spur sustainable businesses," the company's general director, David Geisen, told reporters.

The category offers over 6,000 environmentally-friendly items, from solar heaters to organic foods, electric motorcycles, hybrid cars and recyclable goods, according to Geisen.

The decision follows a company survey of more than 18,000 users that showed seven out of 10 online shoppers prefer sustainable goods.

In Mexico, 71 percent of the site's users said they are highly or moderately inclined to buy products that are less harmful for the environment, such as organic foods.

Mexican consumers are more likely to purchase recycled products, while consumers in Argentina and Brazil are more concerned about energy conservation, the company said.

Meanwhile, consumers in Colombia and Peru appear to be more aware of the need to conserve water.

The new category comes after three years of EcoFriday celebrations, which marked Earth Day with online promotions of environmentally-friendly products.
