NICOSIA, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- An envoy of the United Nations secretary general is scheduled to undertake a new mission in early September in yet another bid to restart the stalled negotiations for the reunification of Cyprus, the leaders of the island's two communities said on Tuesday.
Jane Holl Lute, a U.N. diplomat, will have further consultations in Nicosia with Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, on drafting the terms of reference for new negotiations, spokesmen for the two said.
Lute had separate telephone conversations with Anastasiades and Akinci overnight on Monday to arrange meetings with them.
A spokesman for Anastasiades said that he and Lute concurred that the drafting of the terms of reference is feasible.
There has been movement forward in the stalled Cyprus peace process after a meeting between Anastasiades and Akinci on August 9, in which they reaffirmed their positions on the kind of solution they will seek, despite saying that basic differences remain on the details.
They also said they would like to meet UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who submitted a six-point plan for the final stage of the negotiations, asking the leaders to come forward with new ideas to conclude a deal.
Depending on the outcome of Lute's mission in Cyprus, the meeting with Guterres is expected to take place in late September in New York, after the UN annual General Assembly.
