BEIJING, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- A spokesperson for a working commission of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee on Wednesday voiced strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to certain U.S. lawmakers' interference in Hong Kong affairs.

Zang Tiewei, spokesperson for the Commission of Legislative Affairs of the NPC Standing Committee, made the comments in response to a question related to the U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi's recent statements on Hong Kong affairs and her calls for the passing of a so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act.

Proposing the Hong Kong-related act once again and making irresponsible remarks on Hong Kong flagrantly interfered in China's internal affairs, said Zang, adding that Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs, and brook no interference from any foreign country.

What the U.S. lawmakers really seek is not the wellbeing of Hong Kong residents, but to undermine the "one country, two systems" principle and the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong, Zang said.

"We solemnly urge relevant members of the U.S. Congress to stop supporting and sheltering violent criminals, stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs, stop pushing forward Hong Kong-related bills, and do more things conducive to building mutual trust and cooperation between China and the United States," he said.

"Any attempt to undermine the 'one country, two systems' principle and the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong will end in failure," said Zang.

In response to a question on Hong Kong's political reform, Zang said the most pressing and overriding task of Hong Kong at the moment is to stop the violence, end the chaos and restore order.

He pointed out that the NPC Standing Committee decision on Aug. 31, 2014 on issues related to the selection of the chief executive and on the method for forming the legislative council is binding.

Hong Kong affairs must be dealt with under the framework of the Constitution, the Basic Law of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and relevant laws and regulations, said Zang.
