UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- The UN envoy for Somalia on Wednesday said the country faces one of the world's most protracted humanitarian crises in the world.
James Swan, UN secretary-general's special representative for Somalia, told the Security Council that currently, about 2.2 million Somalis are facing acute food insecurity.
In addition, he said some 2.6 million Somalis are internally displaced, fleeing conflict and drought.
The United Nations and the Somali government issued a drought impact response plan requesting 686 million U.S. dollar, he said, but only 350 million dollars has so far been secured.
The UN envoy called on the member states of the world body to "urgently resource this plan."
Somalia's overall Humanitarian Response Plan for 2019, requiring 1.08 billion dollars, had only been 22 percent funded by early June.
The Horn of Africa country suffered a heavy toll from two major famines in 1992 and 2011 caused by drought and exacerbated by conflict.
