KUWAIT CITY, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) has equipped a hospital in Sudan with a miniature operating room to treat people affected by floods across the country, KRCS chairman Hilal al-Sayer said on Monday.

KRCS is collaborating with Kuwait's foreign and defense ministries, as well as the Sudanese Red Crescent, to make sure that urgent aid reaches the Sudanese people, he noted.

KRCS will continue to assess the situation in Sudan to determine the scope of aid needed, he added.

The death toll in Sudan's recent heavy rains and floods has exceeded to 60, according to the Sudanese health ministry on Sunday.

Earlier, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that the recent flooding in Sudan has affected an estimated 171,700 people.

According to the OCHA report, 22,634 homes have been destroyed and 11,702 damaged in Sudan, and the majority of the affected people need emergency shelters, water, sanitation and hygiene services.

Since the beginning of August, most states of Sudan have been struck by heavy rains which caused many houses to collapse and cut off main roads.
