Internet access in Brazil reaches 70 pct of population: study

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The share of Brazilians who have access to the internet rose from 67 percent of the population in 2018 to 70 percent in 2019, up by 3 percentage points or 126.9 million people, according to a study published on Wednesday.

The TIC Household study, carried out by the Center of Studies on Information and Communication Technologies, also found that internet access is higher in the urban areas, where it reaches 74 percent of the population, compared with 49 percent in rural areas.

In addition, the share of poorer citizens who have internet access jumped from 42 percent to 48 percent.

Up to 97 percent of Brazilians access the internet through their phones, while 43 percent also use computers and 30 percent use smart TVs.

Among poorer citizens, 56 percent of users access the internet only through phones, compared with 17 percent among richer citizens.

The study also measured the prevalence of e-commerce and other internet services in Brazil. Among internet users, 48 percent have already used online services, such as streaming services, taxi apps, and food delivery services.
