UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is concerned for the people affected by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas and urged support for humanitarian response and recovery efforts, his spokesman said Wednesday.

Following the terrible devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian in the northern Bahamas, Guterres remains deeply concerned for the tens of thousands of people affected in Grand Bahamas and Abaco, Stephane Dujarric said at a press briefing.

The secretary-general offers his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the disaster and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured, Dujarric said.

The United Nations is supporting the ongoing government-led rescue and relief efforts and is part of the assessment teams that are planned to deploy Wednesday to the affected areas, the spokesman said.

"The secretary-general calls on donors to provide funding for the humanitarian response and recovery efforts as soon as the requirements are known," he said.

In addition, Dujarric said UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock will be in the Bahamas Wednesday.

In the capital, Nassau, Lowcock will meet with Prime Minister Hubert Minnis to discuss UN support and to express the world body's solidarity with the people and government of the Bahamas.
