ATHENS, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- One refugee lost her life, one was missing and 12 other refugees and migrants on board a boat were rescued off the coast of Greece's Samos island on Friday, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

According to initial information from the local hospital, the victim, a 65-year-old woman, passed away from pathological causes.

The man who went missing after jumping in the waters, according to the survivors, was the smuggler.

More than one million people have crossed into Greece from Turkey since 2015 seeking refuge in Europe.

Most continued their trip to other European countries, hundreds perished in the sea, while about 70,000 are stranded in Greece after the closure of borders along the Balkan route in 2016.

This August Greek authorities recorded more than 7,000 new arrivals, a record high since the launch of the EU-Turkey agreement in March 2016 aimed to stem the influx.
