GENEVA, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- China hopes that all parties will advocate dialogue and cooperation at the upcoming new session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, China's Permanent Representative to the UN Office at Geneva, Chen Xu, said on Friday.
Chen was speaking at a press conference here at the European headquarter of the UN ahead of the 42nd session of the Human Rights Council which runs on Sept. 9-27.
"The whole process should be consensus-building rather than confrontational," he said, adding that China would always be opposed to the practice of name and shame and "using country-specific resolutions to exert pressures."
"We hope that the Human Rights Council in this session could pay more attention to the full implementation of the 2030 agenda and to the fight against racial discrimination and to cope with terrorism," he noted.
The Chinese diplomat said that the countries need to balance the promotion of all kinds of human rights and increase investment in economic, social and cultural rights and the rights to development, because "we believe development constitutes the very basis".
He told reporters that all parties should also respect the human rights development path chosen by their own people and avoid imposing their own standards on others.
In the upcoming new session of the UN rights body, Chen said, China will also help improve the representation and voice of developing countries, and promote the development of international human rights governance "in a more just and rational direction."
"We are ready to work together with others in the field of human rights," said the Chinese envoy.
Stressing that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Chen told reporters that in the past 70 years, China's human rights cause has made historic achievements.
"Eight hundred and fifty million people have been lifted out of poverty, and China has built the world's largest education, social security, medical and grassroots democratic systems," he said.
According to the Chinese diplomat, the key to China's achievements lies in its unswervingly practicing socialism with Chinese characteristics, unswervingly following the path of human rights development with Chinese characteristics, and upholding the people's happiness.
"China will continue to promote the development of human rights in an all-round way, constantly satisfying people's needs and aspirations for a better life, and join efforts to build a human community with shared destiny," he noted.
