HARBIN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Wang Yexiao, a 32-year-old surgeon in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, performs operations on fruit.
Excising the "stomach" of oranges and performing a "delivery operation" on pitaya, Wang simulates human organs with fruits intending to arouse the interest of his two-year-old son in medical science.
"Unlike real surgeries, simulating operations on fruit will not scare my kid but attract him because of the bright colors of fruit," he said.
The "fruit doctor" unexpectedly got more than 200,000 followers after posting the videos of how he performed the "surgeries" on a Chinese short-video platform since 2018.
"I posted the videos on the Internet just for fun. I never thought they would receive millions of views," he said. "My followers commented that my videos help them get a lot of knowledge about surgeries."
"I finally know how the cyst on my left kidney was removed," a follower commented on his videos.
It usually takes Wang several hours to complete "fruit surgery." In a video demonstrating the excision surgery of the stomach, he made a "stomach" out of carrot and excised it from an orange, the "patient," during which he also introduced basic knowledge about the surgery.
Working at the intensive care unit (ICU) of a hospital in Hegang City in the province, Wang does not have enough time to shoot as many videos as his followers expect. The busy doctor does not have weekends off and sometimes works more than 20 hours performing three surgeries a day.
"We have a kind of 'sit-up' rest," he said. "We are used to being called to work the minute we lie down to rest."
Wang plans to introduce more basic knowledge about first aid with online live streaming. "The more people learn how to give first-aid treatment, the fewer tragedies will happen."
"Real surgeries are far more complicated and risky than the simulations with fruit," he said. "I hope more people can learn about basic medical knowledge and understand the hard work of doctors through my videos."
