Portuguese Communist Party Secretary-General Jeronimo de Sousa spoke highly of China's defense of the principles of the UN Charter and international law.
LISBON, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- While seeking its domestic development, China is actively promoting international trade and economic cooperation to develop "equitable and mutually beneficial relations between the different countries worldwide," said Portuguese communist party leader.
In a recent interview with Xinhua, Portuguese Communist Party Secretary-General Jeronimo de Sousa spoke highly of China's defense of the principles of the UN Charter and international law.
"We consider China's defense of the principles of the UN Charter and international law to be of great importance. We regard China's efforts in this regard as positive and timely," he said.
"Today, China is increasingly fulfilling international responsibilities, for example, the participation of UN peacekeeping missions, (and) escorting missions in the Gulf of Aden," he said.

Since some Western powers "systematically ignore and disregard the norms of international law," the party leader stressed the importance of "action to affirm and respect the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, the negotiated resolution of international conflicts and the defense of world peace" in the present situation.
As his party advocates "deepening international cooperation in the interest of solving the great problems that plague people and humanity," De Sousa underlined fairness, democracy and peace as integral part of the struggle for social progress.
"We believe that China's progress in its economic and social development and in the construction of socialism will make a major contribution to this universal cause," he said.
"The qualitative advance of China's achievements and achievements towards the construction of socialism, the consolidation of people's power, the leading role of the CCP (the Communist Party of China), (and) the economic, social and cultural advancement of the Chinese people make an important and valuable contribution to the cause of social progress and peace throughout the world, and will have a marked influence on the evolution of the world situation," he said.
