WARSAW, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Two Greenpeace activists have been arrested on Monday night in the port city of Gdansk after their boat, Rainbow Warrior, attempted to block a coal shipment from Mozambique from unloading in Poland.
A spokesman for the Polish border police told Polish media on Tuesday that the arrested activists "posed a threat to water navigation" and they are facing legal proceedings.
Twenty activists were taken in for questioning by the Polish police after the boat attempted to block a coal shipment from Mozambique from entering the Gdansk port.
The activists said that coal imports to Poland doubled in the last two years, to reach almost 20 million tonnes and that one fourth of hard coal used in Poland is imported. Imports of coal are likely to increase, said the environmentalists, if the structure of the energy system does not change to make way for more sustainable forms of energy.
