HARBIN, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- A Siberian musk deer was spotted by an infrared camera in Langxiang nature reserve in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, the nature reserve said.
It was the first time that a camera has captured a Siberian musk deer in the Lesser Hinggan Mountains, according to the nature reserve.
Experts at the Institute of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Heilongjiang Academy of Sciences have identified the animal in the photo, said Zhou Shuge, office director of the nature reserve.
Later, feces of the deer was also found around the spot where the photo was taken, providing important evidence for identifying the deer.
Siberian musk deer, under first-class state protection, has an acute sense of sight and smell. Rare in numbers, the vigilant animal is rarely spotted in the wild.
The Greater and Lesser Hinggan Mountains are important forests in China and have an irreplaceable role in protecting biodiversity and dealing with climate change. Thanks to China's environmental protection efforts in recent years, the number of wild animals such as black bears, wild boars and roe deer are increasing, and Siberian tigers are making more frequent appearances.
