KABUL, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Thirty-five Taliban militants were killed after Afghan security forces waged a special operation in western Farah province on Saturday night, the country's Interior Ministry said Sunday.
"The operation was launched in Anar Dara district of Farah. Those among the killed were Sayyed Azim, insurgent's shadow district chief for Anar Dara, and Esmatullah who served as Taliban chief intelligence in the district," the ministry said in a statement.
The security forces were supported by the Afghan Air Force during the operation in the district, bordering Iran, the statement added.
Afghan security forces have beefed up security operations against militants recently as the country is preparing to hold presidential election scheduled for Sept. 28.
The poll will be the fourth presidential election in Afghanistan since 2001, when the United States invaded the country, ousting the Taliban regime.
The Taliban insurgent group fighting the government has vowed to disrupt the election process.
