SEOUL, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's foreign ministry said Monday that it will focus its diplomacy on an early resumption of the denuclearization talks between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States.
According to the ministry's report submitted to the National Assembly, South Korea will concentrate its diplomatic efforts at the rapid resumption of the working-level dialogue between Pyongyang and Washington to let substantive progress be made for the complete denuclearization of and the lasting peace settlement on the Korean Peninsula.
The report came after Choe Son Hui, the DPRK's first vice foreign minister, said last week that the DPRK was willing to sit with the United States at an agreed-upon time and place in late September to comprehensively discuss issues the two sides had taken up.
Stephen Biegun, U.S. special representative for DPRK affairs, said during his visit to Seoul last month that his country was ready to engage in working-level talks with the DPRK for the peninsula's denuclearization.
The Seoul ministry said it will stably manage situations for the resumed DPRK-U.S. dialogue, noting that it will make plans for working-level dialogue at every level between Seoul and Washington by taking the opportunity of the UN General Assembly session later this month in New York.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in planned to attend the UN session, on the sidelines of which Moon will hold a summit meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The Seoul ministry noted that it will encourage neighboring countries, including China, Russia and Japan, to play a constructive role in helping denuclearize the peninsula and supporting the DPRK-U.S. dialogue.
