Myanmar's ethnic state leader stresses role of news media

YANGON, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- An ethnic state leader of Myanmar has stressed the role of news media and disseminating true news in accordance with media ethics, calling for media contribution as it is the fourth pillar for the emergence of a democratic federal union.

Kachin State Chief Minister Dr. Khet Aung made the remarks at the 7th Ethnic Media Conference which kicked off in the state's capital of Myitgyina on Monday, according to the Information Ministry on Tuesday.

Director-General of the Information and Public Relations Department U Ye Naing suggested for production of quality news in national events, especially from ethnic areas, supporting the ethnic people with media and information literacy in democratization and 2020 General Election and scrutinizing fake news, wrong news and hate speeches.

Kachin Ethnic Literature and Culture Committee Chairman U Hton Phu Dagun pledged cooperation of local communities and media.

During the three-day event which will last until Wednesday, they will discuss the topics of journalists' safety and media sustainability, mega development project and its environmental effect, media freedom and prospects of democratic transition, peace process, reform and trend of ethnic media in Myanmar and ethnic media engagement with justice.

Six previous conferences of its kind were held in Mon, Shan, Chin, Rakhine, Kayah and Kayin states. And during the 6th conference, ethnic media agreed to publish true news about internal peace negotiations and produced good results.
