COLOMBO, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and over 7,000 affected by the adverse weather conditions prevailing across Sri Lanka since last weekend, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) said in its latest update on Tuesday.
One death was reported from the Nuwera Eliya district, in the central highlands which has been one of the worst affected by days of heavy rains and strong winds.
The DMC said two people were also injured in the Nuwera Eliya district and are receiving treatment in state hospitals.
A total of 7,314 people have been affected while 950 people have been moved to safer locations due to risk of floods, landslides and rock falls.
The DMC said tri forces were also on standby for possible flood situations if heavy rains continue within the next 24 hours.
Over 200 houses have also been damaged.
The DMC on Monday issued landslide warnings for several districts of the island country after the Meteorology Department warned of further rains in the coming days.
Some of the districts which have been worst affected are Ratnapura, in south central Sri Lanka, Nuwera Eliya in the central hills and Kegalle located 78 km away from capital Colombo.
The Meteorology Department, in its latest weather update said more rains of above 150 mm were expected in the island in the coming days especially in the western, southern and central parts of the country.
The department urged the public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning.
