UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Security Council on Friday extended the mandate of a UN investigative team to promote accountability for crimes committed by the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group in Iraq.
The 15-member council unanimously adopted Resolution 2490 to extend the mandate of the team by one year till Sept. 21, 2020.
The team, headed by a special adviser, was established by the Security Council in 2017 to support Iraq's efforts to hold the IS accountable by collecting and preserving evidence of acts that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed by the IS in Iraq.
