TRIPOLI, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- The eastern-based army of Libya on Wednesday announced the downing of an aircraft of the rival UN-backed government near the city of Misurata, some 200 km east of the capital Tripoli.
"Anti-aircraft missiles managed to shoot down a Turkish-made plane that was targeting our troops," the eastern-based army's information office said in a statement.
The eastern-based army added that it destroyed an operation chamber of the UN-backed government's forces in Abu-Gren, which is located some 100 km south of Misurata.
The eastern-based army and the UN-backed government have been fighting in and around Tripoli since early April over control of the capital.
The violence killed and injured thousands of people, and displaced nearly 120,000 civilians.
Libya has been plagued by political division and escalating violence ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
