TRIPOLI, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Libya's UN-backed Prime Minister Fayez Serraj said that the eastern-based army had "destroyed" the political track in the country after launching a military campaign to take over the capital Tripoli nearly six months ago.
Serraj made his remarks during a meeting with the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York, said a statement of the prime minister's information office on Thursday.
"The prime minister said that the aggressor destroyed the political track and all UN efforts after declaring war during the presence of the UN secretary general in Tripoli," the statement said.
The eastern-based army, led by Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign since early April to take over Tripoli and overthrow Serraj's government.
The violence has claimed the lives of thousands of people and forced nearly 120,000 people to flee their homes. On Wednesday, the eastern-based army's spokesman said that Haftar supports the political track and national dialogue in the country.
Following the 2011 uprising that toppled the late leader Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has been suffering escalating violence and political division.
