BAGHDAD, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- An Iraqi protester was killed and 40 others were wounded on Tuesday during violent clashes between protesters and security forces in the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
A police source and witnesses told Xinhua on condition of anonymity that the protesters wounded were either suffering from suffocation by tear gas or wounded as riot police tried to disperse them by firing tear, water cannons and live ammunition.
Some security members were also wounded during the clashes, they said.
Earlier in the afternoon, hundreds of Iraqi protesters gathered on the central Tahrir Square to express anger at the absence of improvement in basic services, including lack of electricity, clean water, and jobs for the youths.
Similar demonstrations took place in other Iraqi cities, including Basra, Najaf and al-Diwaniyah, where people demanded for better basic services, job opportunities and holding corrupt officials accountable for their negligence. Enditem
