WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Philadelphia, the largest city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, on Tuesday honored the city's Chinese American community on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

"The first known migration of the Chinese American people to Philadelphia began in the mid-19th century, and over the years our city has been enriched with many key cultural events and business centers," James F. Kenney, mayor of Philadelphia, said in a proclamation.

"Today, people of Chinese heritage in Philadelphia are active in all aspects of life including in City administration and business leadership to broad participation in the arts and civic and economic development," Kenney said.

A flag-raising ceremony was held Tuesday morning at the city hall to observe the 70th anniversary of the PRC founding that fell on Tuesday, and to salute the many contributions the Chinese American community made to the city.

Hundreds of local Chinese Americans and Chinese students studying in the United States attended the event.

The mayor also announced Tuesday was a day to observe "The People's Republic of China Flag-raising Day" in Philadelphia.
