ALGIERS, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Algeria's National Democratic Rally (RND) on Friday nominated its secretary general and former Culture Minister Azzedine Mihoubi as its candidate for the presidential election on Dec. 12.

Mihoubi was unanimously chosen during the party's national assembly held on Friday in Algiers.

The RND was considered as the second ruling party after the National Liberation Front (FLN), before the outbreak of the popular protest movement on Feb. 22, which forced President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to resign on April 2.

Mihoubi told members of the party that the presidential election is "the best option to ensure the will of the people," adding that the success of Dec. 12 election will surely provide larger political, economic and social stability, and eliminate the deadly power vacuum.

In mid-September, Algerian Interim President Abdelkader Bensalah announced the holding of the presidential election on Dec. 12. So far, as many as 120 people have shown their will to run for the polls.

Mihoubi and two other prominent candidates will run for the next elections, including Ali Benflis, a lawyer and former prime minister (2000-2004), and another ex-premier, Abdelmadjid Tebboune (2017).
