CAIRO, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Arab League (AL) voiced concern over the recent unrest in Iraq and stressed support for the country's peace and stability, the Cairo-based pan-Arab body said in a statement on Saturday.
The AL remarks came as the Iraqi capital Baghdad and several other cities have been witnessing mass protests against alleged lack of services and prevailing corruption and unemployment.
AL Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit called on the Iraqi government "to do whatever would settle the situation and to start immediately an earnest and true dialogue to remove the causes of protests," according to the statement.
At least 93 were killed and around 4,000 were wounded in confrontations during the ongoing protests in Iraq that started on Tuesday, said an Iraqi human rights commission.
On Friday, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi addressed the protesters in a televised speech saying, "your voice is heard even before you protest, and it has reached us clearly."
He promised that his government is working on meeting their demands of "fighting corruption, providing job opportunities, caring for the youth and implementing a comprehensive reform," reassuring that they are not "empty promises."
