TRIPOLI, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Libya's eastern-based army on Saturday said it targeted the International Airport of Misurata city, some 200 km east of the capital Tripoli, and destroyed Turkish-made drone control system.

"Our air force continues to target the militias (UN-backed government's forces) and their gatherings and has carried out a direct airstrike targeting Turkish drone control system in Misurata," the eastern-based army's information office said in a statement.

The UN-backed government's forces said the airstrike injured a worker and caused material damage to the airport.

On Tuesday, the eastern-based army announced targeting the Mitiga International Airport of the capital Tripoli as well as the International Airport of Misurata city and destroying stores of ammunition of drones.

The eastern-based army also announced making a progress in south of the capital Tripoli against the rival UN-backed government's forces, as the armed conflict between the two parties continues.

"The army units have advanced in a number of axes in the capital after fierce clashes that broke out this morning, and took control of new sites that will be revealed as soon as instructions are issued," the eastern-based army's information office said in a statement.

The statement also said that the eastern-based army units have seized a number of military vehicles, weapons and ammunition of the UN-backed government's forces, and also captured a number of their rival's troops.

Since early April, the eastern-based army has been leading a military campaign against the UN-backed government in and around Tripoli, attempting to take over the city and overthrow the UN-backed government.

The fighting has killed and injured thousands of people, and also displaced nearly 120,000 civilians.

Libya has been plagued by political division and instability, ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
