BERLIN, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Head of the German Green party, Anton Hofreiter, demanded the resignation of Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer on Thursday.
Scheuer had "lost hundreds of millions of euros in taxpayers' money by hastily concluding contracts for car tolls," Hofreiter told the German newspaper Passauer Neue Presse.
Scheuer has been criticized for signing contracts with companies that were to collect the planned highway toll before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) had asserted the legal validity, according to the report.
After Austria had sued and the CJEU declared the German highway toll to be illegitimate because of discrimination against non-German EU citizens, the German government had to withdraw from the contracts.
"If Scheuer does not resign, I expect the Chancellor to dismiss him," Hofreiter said.
