COTONOU, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Three suspected traffickers were arrested in possession of four elephant tusks, weighing a total of 14 kg, during a police operation Thursday in Djougou, about 425 km northwest to the economic capital Cotonou in Benin, said an official release.
Xinhua received the release on Monday in Cotonou.
According to the release, these alleged smugglers must appear before Justice to answer for their acts.
In Benin, the law imposes a fine of between 300,000 and 800,000 CFA francs (about 504.36 and 1,345 U.S. dollars) or a period of imprisonment from 6 months up to 5 years on whoever unlawfully imports, exports, re-exports or markets wild animals or their trophies and remains.
