Bangladesh border guard kills Indian security personnel at int'l border: Indian official

NEW DELHI, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- A Bangladeshi border guard shot dead one Indian security personnel, and injured another, belonging to the Border Security Force (BSF) in the country's eastern state of West Bengal on Thursday, senior BSF official told Xinhua over phone.

The incident occurred near the BSF post in the Murshidabad district of the state.

After the incident, BSF Director General V.K. Johri called his counterpart Major General Shafeenul Islam over a hotline and raised a serious concern over the incident.

According to the senior BSF official, the incident occurred while a BSF team was returning back after trying to resolve an issue of Indian fishermen who were fishing in the river "Padma" that flows along the international border between the two neighbouring countries.

"The Bangladeshi security personnel had apprehended two Indian fishermen. Thereafter, a team of BSF personnel approached the Bangladeshi border guards in a bid to resolve the issue. On seeing the aggressiveness of the Bangladeshis, the BSF team members decided to return, when suddenly one of the Bangladeshi border guards opened fire on the Indians," said a BSF official privy to the incident.

He further stated that in the firing two BSF personnel were injured and were being taken to a nearby medical facility. Head Constable identified as Vijay Bhan Singh succumbed to his injuries, while the other security personnel injured in the incident is being given medical aid, and he is said to be out of danger.

According to the latest reports, senior BSF officials have reached the spot and contact has been established with the Bangladeshi counterparts.
