Death toll from Brazil building collapse rises to two

According to local authorities, the building was built without the usual permits and licenses, and there is no construction registry or information on the engineering firm responsible.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from collapse of a residential building in Brazil has climbed to two, authorities said on Wednesday.

Rescuers are still sifting through the rubble for at least nine people reported missing.

Nine others were rescued alive. Most of the victims were residents of the building, which collapsed on Tuesday morning.

The building was located a few kilometers from the beach in a well-off neighborhood in Fortaleza, capital of the northeast state of Ceara.

The seven-story structure was built in the 1970s and had 13 apartments, including a penthouse.

According to local authorities, the building was built without the usual permits and licenses, and there is no construction registry or information on the engineering firm responsible.

The building was reportedly undergoing renovation work and papers for a renovation were filed on Monday, a day before the collapse.
