NEW DELHI, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed anguish over Saudi Arabia's bus crash claiming as many as 35 lives.
The mishap occurred near the Muslim holy city of Medina, when the ill-fated bus crashed into another heavy vehicle late on Wednesday night, killing 35 people. Four passengers were also injured in the accident.
Among the victims were Arab and Asian pilgrims. Local media carried pictures of the bus engulfed in flames and with its windows blown out.
Those injured in the road accident were transferred to a local hospital.
Expressing condolences over the accident, the Indian PM tweeted: "Anguished by the news of a bus crash near Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. Praying for a quick recovery of the injured."
Meanwhile, the Indian External Affairs Ministry was trying to ascertain the details of Indians involved in the bus crash.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed his deepest condolences to families of the victims of the accident. "Our Consulate in Jeddah has been asked to ascertain the details of Indians involved in the accident," he tweeted Thursday evening.
