TEHRAN, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif discussed the latest developments in Syria with his Turkish counterpart over phone on Friday, official IRNA news agency reported.

In the telephone conversation, Zarif and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed the current situation in northern Syria following Turkey's agreement to temporarily halt its operation against the Kurdish militants.

On Thursday, Zarif also discussed the latest regional developments in northern Syria with the Russian, Iraqi and Syrian foreign ministers over phone.

No details are available about the Iranian foreign minister's talks with his counterparts over Syria.

Following the recent withdrawal of the United States from northern Syria, Turkish soldiers on Oct. 9 launched an assault on Kurdish fighters, whom Turkey considers as "terrorists" in northern Syria.

On Thursday, Turkey agreed to a five-day ceasefire in northeast Syria to allow for withdrawal of Kurdish forces.
