BERLIN, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Bayern Munich squandered the chance to move atop the standings after Augsburg's Alfred Finnbogason made it 2-2 in the closing period at the eighth round in Bundesliga on Saturday.

The defending champions looked like the sure winners after coming from behind. However, the German record champions missed a number of chances in the second half and got punished by Finnbogason's late leveller.

Augsburg grabbed a bright start on home soil and flabbergasted the visitors from Munich in the first minute of the game when Marco Richter tapped home Rani Khedira's header from a very close range to break the deadlock.

It took the visitors only 14 minutes to level the scores as Gnabry's pinpoint cross into the box allowed Lewandowski to score his 12th Bundesliga goal of the season.

Niko Kovac's men remained on the front foot and produced a couple of chances yet they were unable to turn the tides before the break.

Things changed after the restart as Bayern Munich needed only four minutes in the second half to make it 2-1 as Gnabry had all time and space at the edge of the box to rifle the ball into the bottom left corner.

Bayern increased the pressure and should have added more goals to their lead but neither Philippe Coutinho nor Kingsley Coman was able to beat Augsburg goalkeeper Tomas Koubek.

The visitors continued to press forward but also substitute Thomas Muller pulled wide with only Koubek to beat.

Bayern's wastefulness in front of the target got punished with the subsequent attack as Sergio Cordova shrugged off Bayern defender Lucas Hernandez and square passed into the area where Finnbogason poked home the two-all draw.

"We conceded an early and late goal, that should not happen. Also, we had many golden chances and did not utilize them. I am upset, as we played a good game but the result spoils everything," Bayern head coach Niko Kovac said.

With the result, Bayern Munich stay on the third place meanwhile Augsburg slipped from the 14th to the 15th position.

Elsewhere, Wolfsburg move on the second place and remain the only unbeaten team in the Bundesliga after Wout Weghorst cancelled out Timo Werner's opener to snatch a 1-1 draw at Leipzig.

Newly promoted Union Berlin secured their second win of the season after edging Freiburg on the goals from Marius Bulter and Marcus Ingvartsen.

Dodi Lukebakio's equalizer helped Hertha Berlin to hijack a 1-1 draw from Werder Bremen and Fortuna Dusseldorf overcame ten-men Mainz 1-0 on Rouwen Hennings' sole goal of the game.
